Common questions

Kyushu sits atop one of the world's most volcanically active zones. Beppu alone has over 2,000 individual hot spring sources across eight distinct spring types — more than anywhere else in Japan. The island also contains Yufu, Kurokawa, Yufuin, and dozens of lesser-known resort towns, giving travelers an extraordinary range of settings, temperatures, and mineral profiles within a compact area.

The JR Kyushu Shinkansen connects Hakata (Fukuoka) to Kagoshima in about 80 minutes, with limited-express trains branching east toward Beppu and Oita. Local buses and taxis are essential for reaching rural onsen. The "Visit Kyushu" rail pass covers unlimited JR travel for 3–5 days and is strongly recommended.

The eight spring types are: Tanzen (sodium chloride), Niyoru (sodium bicarbonate), Myoban (alum sulfate), Kankaiji (radioactive radium), Shio (salt), Kamado (steam), Horita (simple thermal), and Beppu (iron). Each has different mineral compositions, colours, and reputedly different health effects.
