About this spring

On the volcanic shoreline of Lake Batur inside a massive caldera, Toya Bungkah's clear, odorless geothermal pools look directly across the calm blue lake toward the towering crater rim of Mount Abang. The water is warmed by the volcano itself, and several lakeside complexes offer infinity-edge pools with open caldera views. It is a popular recovery stop for hikers who have just finished the early-morning sunrise trek up Mount Batur.

History

The Batur caldera is one of Bali's most sacred volcanic landscapes, its waters associated with the lake goddess Dewi Danu and watched over by the important Pura Ulun Danu Batur temple.

Toya Bungkah, a name that refers to the spring water itself, has served pilgrims and trekkers circling Mount Batur for generations, who valued the warm lakeside water after the cold climb. From the 1990s the shoreline was developed with manicured pools and spa facilities as Kintamani became a major tourist draw, and the surrounding caldera is now recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark for its volcanic significance.

Local guide

Toya Bungkah sits on the shore of Lake Batur inside a vast volcanic caldera, reached by fully asphalted but steep and winding roads that descend from Kintamani, so drive attentively on the way in. The classic time to come is right after a Mount Batur sunrise trek, when the warm pools soothe tired legs and the lake views are at their best, though that also makes early morning the busiest window. A mid-week late morning is quieter. Be ready for a higher price point than other Bali springs, often around Rp100,000 or more, because these are developed, resort-style lakeside facilities rather than a simple village bath. The upside is that premium tickets usually fold in a towel, a locker, and sometimes a welcome drink. The water is clear and odorless, kept comfortably hot at roughly 38 to 42 degrees, with modern showers on site and modest swimwear expected. The single best tip is to choose one of the lakeside infinity-edge pools, where the water seems to merge with the lake and the crater rim of Mount Abang fills the view, making for spectacular photos. Bring your own swimwear and sandals, keep an eye on belongings in the open areas, and stay hydrated, since the heat and altitude combine to tire you quickly.

Benefits

Simple thermal springs have lower dissolved mineral content but are valued for the pure therapeutic effect of heat immersion itself — easing muscle tension and improving circulation. Considered the gentlest introduction to hot spring bathing.

Note

Standard precautions apply: avoid bathing within 30 minutes of eating, keep soaks to 10–15 minutes for first-timers, and hydrate before and after.

Wild lutung monkeys are regularly seen in the tropical canopy overhanging the steaming baths, and the misty pine-forest mountain road in is part of the appeal.
