About this spring

A rustic, lesser-known hot spring site situated at the base of Mount Banahaw where therapeutic sulfuric water surfaces near a natural mountain riverbed. The area is basic and local, featuring straightforward public dipping pools built to catch the thermal overflow. It is heavily favored by locals who seek the healing benefits of Banahaw's volcanic activity without large crowds.

History

The historic town of Tayabas was once so prominent that it served as the original capital and namesake of the entire province before it was renamed to honor President Manuel L.

Quezon in 1946. Nearby, the massive peak of Mount Banahaw quietly fuels these riverside springs through a complex subterranean network. Although the volcano appears serene, it is actually classified as potentially active and surprised geologists with a sudden phreatic eruption in 2010. These hot springs have provided a reliable, soothing escape for local residents through centuries of political changes and geological shifts.

Local guide

This basic, local spot sits quietly right beside a rushing mountain river. You will see simple concrete enclosures built by the community to catch the hot sulfuric water as it bubbles from the earth. It is an authentic neighborhood destination where locals come to chat and relax.

The water has a distinct sulfur smell and feels very hot, making a quick dip in the adjacent cool river highly refreshing. Bring basic footwear like rubber flip-flops, your own towel, and light snacks. There are no touristy amenities here, just raw local life.

Avoid rainy afternoons because the nearby river can rise quickly and muddy the thermal pools. Early mornings offer the cleanest water and a peaceful atmosphere. You can find small sari-sari stores nearby for cold drinks, but eat your heavy meals in Tayabas town.

Sulfur
Benefits

Sulfuric hot springs are among the most studied in balneology worldwide. The sulfur compounds, primarily hydrogen sulfide and thiosulfate, have documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Regular bathing is associated with relief from chronic skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis, as well as joint inflammation and muscle soreness. Sulfuric waters have been used therapeutically across Asia and Europe for centuries.

Note

The distinctive rotten-egg smell dissipates quickly after leaving the bath. Avoid if you have a sulfur allergy, very sensitive skin, or respiratory conditions. Remove silver jewellery before entering — sulfur will blacken it permanently.

Simple Thermal
Benefits

Simple thermal springs have lower dissolved mineral content but are valued for the pure therapeutic effect of heat immersion itself — easing muscle tension and improving circulation. Considered the gentlest introduction to hot spring bathing.

Note

Standard precautions apply: avoid bathing within 30 minutes of eating, keep soaks to 10–15 minutes for first-timers, and hydrate before and after.
