About this spring
Located in Taiwan's sunny far south, this beautifully restored park features free public foot-soaking streams decorated with Japanese torii gates and lantern pavilions. The sodium bicarbonate water is crystal clear, odorless, and soothing for tired traveler joints. Every winter, the park is illuminated by a colorful light festival that attracts visitors from across the island.
Highlights
History
Sichongxi was historically used by the local Paiwan indigenous people who roamed the southern hills.
Formal bathhouses were established early in the Japanese colonial era. The spring reached peak historical prominence in 1932 when Prince Nobuhito, the younger brother of Emperor Hirohito, spent his honeymoon here. The traditional bathhouse he used has been meticulously preserved at today's Qingquan Hot Spring Hotel, serving as a landmark of Taiwan's rich colonial spa heritage.
Local guide
To reach Sichongxi, you will head to the sunny southern peninsula of Pingtung County, turning inland from the coastal highway near Checheng and driving along the quiet Sichongxi River valley. The landscape changes from crashing ocean waves to rolling, sun drenched hills covered in low tropical brush. Arriving at the Sichongxi Hot Spring Park, you will find a beautifully restored hillside sanctuary designed with elegant Japanese style wooden pavilions, torii gates, and winding stone walkways that climb up the slope. The atmosphere feels like an open air cultural museum blended with a tropical park. The public park features excellent free foot soaking streams where you can sit beneath wooden roofs and enjoy the water. For a full soak, head to the historic public bathhouse or nearby resorts, where day passes cost between two hundred and four hundred TWD. The public bathhouse features gender segregated indoor nude pools where clothing is strictly forbidden and swim caps are required. Tattoos may require covering in strict indoor settings, but are fine in the outdoor resort pools. Sichongxi's water is a high quality sodium bicarbonate spring, crystal clear, entirely odorless, and maintained around forty-one degrees Celsius. It leaves your skin feeling incredibly smooth. You must bring your own towel and drinking water. To experience the park at its most magical, visit in the late afternoon during the winter months, when the entire hillside lights up with thousands of purple and pink LED light installations for the annual Sichongxi Hot Spring Season. After your soak, stop by a local shop to try their famous hot spring red dan eggs, which are local duck eggs salted using the mineral rich thermal water.
Mineral chemistry
Bicarbonate springs cleanse and soften the skin surface, removing excess sebum without stripping the skin's acid mantle. Traditionally recommended for acne-prone skin and sensitive skin types.
Bicarbonate springs are generally among the most gentle and well-tolerated onsen types.
