About this spring
Fed by the active Tangkuban Perahu volcano, Ciater is one of West Java's most popular hot spring resorts, set among tea plantations on the northern slopes near Bandung. The sulfur-rich water flows through a sprawling network of public and private pools, with warm channels and tiered swimming zones that emit a light sulfurous aroma. It is the most famous and most developed hot spring destination in West Java.
Highlights
History
Local Sundanese communities had bathed in these volcanic streams on the slopes of Tangkuban Perahu for generations before any formal development.
In 1974 the springs were built out into the managed Sari Ater resort, one of the earliest large-scale hot spring properties in West Java. Sitting on the historic mountain route between Bandung and Subang, it grew through the late twentieth century into the region's most famous weekend escape, and the surrounding tea estates that the Dutch first planted still frame the grounds today.
Local guide
Most visitors approach from Bandung, climbing the winding Lembang road past Tangkuban Perahu before dropping into the tea country around Ciater, so build in time for the narrow mountain bends rather than rushing them. The complex is huge, and the experience changes completely with timing: arrive on a weekday morning and the terraced pools are calm, but on a weekend afternoon the main pools fill with local families and the warm cascades get crowded. A day ticket bought at the main gate runs around Rp35,000, with lockers to rent and a row of food stalls for fried snacks and hot drinks afterward. The water here is genuinely volcanic, fed straight from the mountain, mineral-rich and on the acidic side, so it leaves skin tingling but will sting if it gets into your eyes or a fresh cut. Bring your own towel, a change of clothes, and non-slip sandals, because the stone walkways between pools stay slick. For a quieter soak away from the splashing children, pay the small extra fee for the premium pools or a private cabana set back among the trees. The mountain air cools sharply after 5 PM, which is when an evening soak feels best, so pack something warm for the drive back down.
Mineral chemistry
Sulfuric hot springs are among the most studied in balneology worldwide. The sulfur compounds, primarily hydrogen sulfide and thiosulfate, have documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Regular bathing is associated with relief from chronic skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis, as well as joint inflammation and muscle soreness. Sulfuric waters have been used therapeutically across Asia and Europe for centuries.
The distinctive rotten-egg smell dissipates quickly after leaving the bath. Avoid if you have a sulfur allergy, very sensitive skin, or respiratory conditions. Remove silver jewellery before entering — sulfur will blacken it permanently.
Simple thermal springs have lower dissolved mineral content but are valued for the pure therapeutic effect of heat immersion itself — easing muscle tension and improving circulation. Considered the gentlest introduction to hot spring bathing.
Standard precautions apply: avoid bathing within 30 minutes of eating, keep soaks to 10–15 minutes for first-timers, and hydrate before and after.

Cisolok is the only natural geyser hot spring in Indonesia, set along a boulder-strewn river near the surf coast at Pelabuhan Ratu within the Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu UNESCO Global Geopark. High-pressure geothermal water spurts several metres into the air from vents in the riverbed, then cools as it cascades into the river, creating warm natural pools where visitors can sit. The setting mixes oceanic air, rushing river sounds, and volcanic mineral steam.
