History

This public bath house sits at the southern base of Mount Malindig, a majestic dormant stratovolcano that anchors the unique island province of Marinduque.

The island is world-famous for its annual Moriones Festival, a vibrant Holy Week tradition where locals wear heavy Roman soldier masks in a week-long street drama. In 1996, the province suffered the catastrophic Marcopper mining disaster, which severely polluted local rivers and forever changed how residents view industrial mining. These therapeutic sulfur pools have offered a natural place of healing and clean relaxation for generations of islanders.

Local guide

Located at the very base of the majestic Mount Malindig volcano, this island destination greets you with a very strong, unmistakable scent of volcanic sulfur. You will find two simple, round concrete pools built to catch the natural thermal run-off. It has a nostalgic, old-school public bath house feel.

The water has a unique greenish-white tint due to the high mineral concentration and feels incredibly soothing on the skin. Remember to leave all metal jewelry in your bag, and bring a dark towel that you do not mind staining. It is highly popular with elderly locals seeking joint relief.

The pools are best enjoyed during the cooler morning hours before the tropical sun warms up the open concrete decks. There are small local eateries nearby selling basic native snacks like arrowroot cookies and cold drinks. The traditional, slow-paced island atmosphere makes the soak deeply relaxing.

Mineral chemistry

Sulfur
Benefits

Sulfuric hot springs are among the most studied in balneology worldwide. The sulfur compounds, primarily hydrogen sulfide and thiosulfate, have documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Regular bathing is associated with relief from chronic skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis, as well as joint inflammation and muscle soreness. Sulfuric waters have been used therapeutically across Asia and Europe for centuries.

Note

The distinctive rotten-egg smell dissipates quickly after leaving the bath. Avoid if you have a sulfur allergy, very sensitive skin, or respiratory conditions. Remove silver jewellery before entering — sulfur will blacken it permanently.

Acidic
Benefits

Acidic springs (pH below 6) have natural exfoliating properties. The low pH gently dissolves dead skin cells, leaving skin noticeably smoother after a soak. Strongly acidic springs (pH below 3) also carry antimicrobial effects potent enough that they have historically been used to treat skin infections.

Note

Limit initial soaks to 3–5 minutes until you know how your skin responds. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water afterwards to neutralise the acid. Not recommended for broken skin, active eczema flare-ups, fresh tattoos, or children under 10.
