History

Long used by the local Atayal and Saisiyat indigenous peoples, the thermal source was developed during the Japanese colonial era under the name Inoue Hot Spring, becoming a popular highland resort.

Due to shifting geological strata the spring water disappeared for several years, until the devastating September 21 earthquake in 1999 reopened the deep underground pathways and the mineral waters surged back to the surface. The valley is also famous as a place of exile for the warlord Zhang Xueliang and as the home where the beloved author San Mao once lived, so the spring today sits within a layered cultural landscape.
