History

The hot springs of Guguan were originally utilized by the local Atayal indigenous people.

During the Japanese colonial era, around 1907, formal bathhouses were established and the spring became widely known as Meiji Hot Spring. After the completion of the Central Cross Island Highway in the 1960s, Guguan became a major rest stop and tourist hub, surviving a massive earthquake in 1999 to re emerge as a highly modernized alpine spa destination.

Local guide

Reaching Guguan involves a dramatic drive from Taichung City along Central Taiwan's Provincial Highway 8, snaking deep into the rugged Central Cross Island Highway corridor. The road climbs steadily alongside the wide, boulder strewn Dajia River, bounded by towering mountain walls that feel increasingly imposing as you near the town. Arriving in Guguan, you will find a bustling, high altitude alpine resort village complete with a beautifully manicured public park, suspension bridges, and a visitor center dedicated to hot spring culture. The air is fresh and notably cooler than the coastal plains below. Guguan Hot Spring Park features wonderful public foot soaking streams that are completely free to use. Here you can sit on stone ledges beneath shady trees and drop your feet into the clear, warm water. For a full body soak, you can buy a day pass to the public outdoor pools of the adjacent resorts, usually costing around three hundred to five hundred TWD. These resort pools are coed and require swimsuits and caps, so tattoos are generally not an issue. The water here is a weak alkaline carbonic acid spring, exceptionally clear and carrying a very faint, clean sulfur note. It is rich in organic sulfides, which leaves a light, smooth glaze on your skin. Temperatures are carefully regulated across multiple pools between thirty-eight and forty-three degrees Celsius. You should bring a small towel for the foot paths or a full swim kit for the resorts. The town gets incredibly busy with weekend hikers and families, so a morning visit on a Thursday offers the best chance for quiet relaxation. For a unique local detail, visit the park's special foot pools that contain tiny doctor fish that gently nibble away dead skin from your feet.

Mineral chemistry

Carbonated (CO₂)
Benefits

Carbonated hot springs are genuinely rare. The dissolved carbon dioxide creates micro-bubbles that cling to the skin, dilating capillaries and boosting local circulation — sometimes called "heart baths."

Note

Carbonated springs are typically cooler than other spring types. Those with cardiovascular conditions should soak for shorter periods (10–15 minutes max) and exit slowly to avoid lightheadedness.

Sulfur
Benefits

Sulfuric hot springs are among the most studied in balneology worldwide. The sulfur compounds, primarily hydrogen sulfide and thiosulfate, have documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Regular bathing is associated with relief from chronic skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis, as well as joint inflammation and muscle soreness. Sulfuric waters have been used therapeutically across Asia and Europe for centuries.

Note

The distinctive rotten-egg smell dissipates quickly after leaving the bath. Avoid if you have a sulfur allergy, very sensitive skin, or respiratory conditions. Remove silver jewellery before entering — sulfur will blacken it permanently.

The name translates literally to Cold Water Pit because its water sits at a lower temperature compared to other boiling volcanic vents in the park.
