About this spring
Asahi is an extremely rare seabed saltwater hot spring, one of only a handful in the world, located on the coral reef shoreline of volcanic Green Island. It features open-air concrete rings built right where the hot coral water bubbles up, allowing bathers to hear the crashing Pacific waves. The water is heavily mineralized, clear, and distinctly salty.
Highlights
History
The indigenous Tao and Amis peoples who sailed these waters were well aware of the warm seeps along the Green Island coral reefs.
During the Japanese colonial era, the island was used as an isolated outpost, and in 1920, the colonial authorities officially cleared the site and built basic stone structures around the reef vents, naming it Asahi, meaning rising sun, for its clear view of the eastern horizon. In the late twentieth century, the national scenic area administration fully modernized the complex into a world class marine spa.
Local guide
The journey to Asahi, also known as Zhaori, is an unforgettable expedition that begins with taking a fifty minute ferry or a tiny prop plane from Taitung to Green Island, a rugged volcanic outpost out in the Pacific Ocean. Once on the island, the best way to get around is by renting a scooter and riding along the spectacular coastal highway, where dramatic black volcanic cliffs meet the deep blue ocean. Asahi sits on the southeastern tip of the island, right on a rocky coral reef exposed to the crashing waves of the Pacific. It is one of only three true seabed saltwater hot springs in the entire world. The atmosphere is raw, windy, and grand. The facility features three circular outdoor concrete pools built right into the coral reef flats, along with a modern indoor spa complex. Entry costs around two hundred and fifty TWD. This is a public coed facility, so a swimsuit and swim cap are strictly required. Tattoos are fully accepted due to the outdoor, open air public nature of the park. The water is drawn directly from the subterranean volcanic rock, it is clear but intensely salty, carrying a strong marine mineral scent and a slightly bitter taste. The temperature fluctuates with the tide but is generally maintained around forty degrees Celsius in the main pools. You must bring a towel, sandals for the sharp coral rock, and secure sun protection. The ultimate local experience is arriving at four thirty in the morning during the summer to soak in the reef pools while watching the sun rise directly out of the Pacific Ocean. After your sunrise bath, walk to the adjacent geothermal cooking troughs to boil a basket of fresh eggs in the salty volcanic water.
Mineral chemistry
Water character inferred from mineral type — verify on site.
Sodium chloride springs, essentially natural saltwater baths, are celebrated for their warming and moisturising effects. The salt forms a thin film on the skin that slows moisture evaporation, keeping skin hydrated longer than a freshwater bath.
Those with high blood pressure or heart conditions should consult a doctor before bathing, as the warming effect increases circulation. Avoid immersing open wounds.
