About this spring
Located on the dramatic northern coastline, this historic bathhouse offers iron-rich marine hot spring water with a golden hue. The rooftop open-air pools provide panoramic views over the coastal wetlands and the open sea. The water contains a natural salt content that helps the body retain heat after bathing.
Highlights
History
The Jinshan spring was officially developed in 1939 by the Japanese Governor-General's office, which constructed an elegant, Western style two story brick bathhouse to serve as an elite seaside resort and social hub for high ranking colonial officials.
Following the war, the building fell into neglect and was used as a military outpost before being lovingly restored by private preservationists in 2000, who revived the original architectural details and reopened the unique seabed spring to the public.
Local guide
The journey to Jinshan is a spectacular coastal trip from Taipei, taking the MRT to Tamsui Station and then boarding the Crown Northern Coast bus, or driving a scooter along the dramatic northern shoreline via Highway 2. The road hugs the rugged Pacific edge, passing sandy beaches and black stone cliffs before turning into the old coastal town of Jinshan. The Jinshan Governor General Hot Spring sits at the edge of the town near the old fishing harbor, housed in a beautiful, double story historic colonial building painted in soft turquoise and cream tones. The atmosphere is deeply nostalgic and coastal, with the salty sea breeze mingling with warm volcanic steam. This facility is famous for its rare iron oxide and sulfur seabed spring water. Due to its close proximity to the ocean, the water is drawn from deep beneath the sea floor, emerging with a clear but slightly yellowish, rusty tint from the iron minerals, and a distinctly salty taste. It is completely unique and leaves a refreshing, crisp mineral coating on your skin, with pools ranging from thirty-eight to forty-three degrees Celsius. A day pass to the open air rooftop pools costs around three hundred TWD. These public outdoor pools are coed and require standard swimsuits and caps, making them highly tattoo friendly. If you prefer, there are also traditional gender segregated indoor nude baths on the lower floors. You should bring your own towel and a bottle of fresh water. To avoid the heavy weekend crowds of coastal road trippers, plan your visit for a rainy weekday afternoon. After drying off, walk over to the historic Jinshan Old Street to join the crowds lining up for a plate of their legendary sweet and savory Jinshan duck.
Mineral chemistry
Water character inferred from mineral type — verify on site.
Sodium chloride springs, essentially natural saltwater baths, are celebrated for their warming and moisturising effects. The salt forms a thin film on the skin that slows moisture evaporation, keeping skin hydrated longer than a freshwater bath.
Those with high blood pressure or heart conditions should consult a doctor before bathing, as the warming effect increases circulation. Avoid immersing open wounds.
Iron-bearing springs are recognised by their characteristic rust-red or amber colour and metallic taste. The iron content is associated with stimulation of red blood cell production and is traditionally recommended for anaemia and fatigue recovery.
Iron springs will stain light-coloured swimwear and towels a persistent brownish-orange. Those with haemochromatosis (iron overload condition) should seek medical advice before bathing.

Asahi is an extremely rare seabed saltwater hot spring, one of only a handful in the world, located on the coral reef shoreline of volcanic Green Island. It features open-air concrete rings built right where the hot coral water bubbles up, allowing bathers to hear the crashing Pacific waves. The water is heavily mineralized, clear, and distinctly salty.
FREEMaintained by the Yangmingshan National Park administration, this free public bathhouse offers separate indoor pools for men and women alongside an outdoor foot-soaking pool. The name translates literally to Cold Water Pit because its water sits at a lower temperature compared to other boiling volcanic vents in the park. The iron-rich neutral sulfate water leaves a faint rust-colored sediment along the pool walls.

Antong is located along a quiet mountain valley slicing through the Coastal Mountain Range, featuring clear, slightly salty sodium chloride water. The spring area emits a delicate sulfur fragrance and is famous for panoramic views of dark green valleys. A historic single-story dark wood Japanese inn sits at the center of the modern resort complex.

Situated in the pastoral East Rift Valley, Ruisui is famous for producing Taiwan's only iron-rich carbonate hot spring. The mineral-dense water displays a metallic yellow-gold hue and forms a delicate layer of crystallized minerals on the surface known as spring flowers. The valley setting is surrounded by farmland and low green hills.
