About this spring

The thermal water has an incredibly high sulfur content with a strong distinctive odor and trace amounts of radon. The rustic complex has outdoor thermal pools and open air mud pits where visitors apply mineral mud to their skin. It also features a indoor pool covered by a simple dome. The facility borders Lake Koycegiz and is popular with day trippers and wellness travelers. Visitors should wear old dark swimwear as the sulfur mud can easily stain light fabrics.

Sulfide mud bathsScenic lakeside viewsAncient submerged ruins

History

The thermal baths date back to the Roman and Hellenistic eras, when a grand temple of health was constructed at the site to treat skin and joint ailments.

The ruins of this ancient healing center now lie submerged beneath the rising waters of Lake Koycegiz, reachable only by the same boat crossing visitors use today. The modern municipal baths preserve access to these historically famous mud pools.

Local guide

Reaching Sultaniye requires a scenic boat crossing from Dalyan's town dock, gliding across the river and lake before arriving at a rustic complex where mud pits and outdoor thermal pools sit right at the water's edge. The sulfur smell is immediate and strong, and many visitors head straight for the open-air mud pits, applying the mineral-rich mud to their skin before rinsing off in the adjoining pool.

Wear old, dark swimwear you do not mind staining, since the sulfur mud leaves marks that are hard to remove, and confirm the return boat schedule with your captain before wandering off, since departures from the springs are less frequent than from Dalyan itself. A simple domed indoor pool is available if you prefer to avoid the open-air mud entirely.

Midweek visits tend to be quieter than the boat tours that arrive on weekends. There are no real dining options at the springs themselves, so plan to eat in Dalyan before or after the crossing, where riverside restaurants serve fresh grilled fish.

Calcium Chloride
Benefits

Calcium chloride springs share the heat-retaining property of sodium chloride springs but with a stronger warming effect. Prized for muscle and joint relief.

Note

The strong warming effect means those with cardiovascular conditions, high blood pressure, or pregnancy should limit soak duration and consult a doctor if in doubt.

Sulfur
Benefits

Sulfuric hot springs are among the most studied in balneology worldwide. The sulfur compounds, primarily hydrogen sulfide and thiosulfate, have documented antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Regular bathing is associated with relief from chronic skin conditions including eczema and psoriasis, as well as joint inflammation and muscle soreness. Sulfuric waters have been used therapeutically across Asia and Europe for centuries.

Note

The distinctive rotten-egg smell dissipates quickly after leaving the bath. Avoid if you have a sulfur allergy, very sensitive skin, or respiratory conditions. Remove silver jewellery before entering — sulfur will blacken it permanently.

Radium (Radon)
Benefits

Radium or radon springs are a recognised therapeutic category in several countries. At the low concentrations found in natural springs, exposure is associated with hormesis, a mild beneficial stress response.

Note

Radon concentrations in natural hot springs are far below levels associated with health risk. Those who are pregnant should consult a doctor before bathing.
