Hot springs in Hakone

Hakone is a sizable onsen district spread across a caldera, roughly 90 minutes from Tokyo by rail. Seventeen distinct spring sources supply the area's bathhouses, which range from large hotel rotenburo with views of Mt. Fuji and Lake Ashi to small, family-operated facilities tucked along the Old Tokaido road. Because the mineral makeup differs from one source to the next, visiting multiple bathhouses yields a genuinely different soaking experience each time.

Miyanoshita sits on a plateau in the Haya River valley within the Hakone caldera and ranks among the oldest and most storied springs in the region. It belongs to the group known as the Seven Hot Springs of Hakone and has drawn both Japanese and foreign travelers since the Edo period. The Fujiya Hotel opened its doors here in 1878 and was among the first Western-style resort hotels in Japan.
